Think of an tropical island getaway in Thailand, and you will probably think of Phuket or Koh Samui or Krabi. But do you know Koh Chang is also one of Thailand’s best island getaways? In fact, Koh Chang is the second largest island of Thailand, and it’s located near to the eastern gulf of Thailand, near the borders between Thailand and Cambodia.
Koh Chang, aka Ko Chang or the Elephant Island, is also a part of the Mu Koh Chang National Park. Though slightly out of the way, Koh Chang is an unique destination that stands out among its competitors. There are plenty of rather clean beaches and nature exploration to be done. Best of all, you don’t have to worry about the immerse crowd like the other popular tourist beaches. Here are some of the best of Koh Chang we would like to share with you.
1. The Lovely Beaches
Koh Chang has a few beaches that offers the best experience for your tropical getaway. One of the more popular ones are Kai Bae Beach. A good mix of back-packers’ accommodation and luxury resorts, Kai Bae Beach has a good range of selection for your stay. It also has a good range of restaurants and bars, and friendly locals who give good recommendations on where to go and what to eat.
Though named the Lonely Beach, this beach is hardly lonely at all. Well-loved by party-goers, this beach is home to some up-market resorts, bars and cafes. It is considered the hub for the tourists and there are plenty of late night parties going around.
If you like the world under the sea, be sure to check out the snorkeling packages in Koh Chang. the Koh Chang Marine National Park offers an amazing view of fishes, corals and other wildlife through its clear waters. Some packages even cater to bring you to other nearby islands and explore the ocean to your hearts’ content. One of the best experience to explore when you’re there!
Balance your water activities with some jungle trekking. Koh Chang is also well known for its wilderness beauty. Explore the jungle to witness some of the wild flowers and exotic species of birds. Try some canopying and climb up the trees for an aerial view of the surrounding Nature. However, do note that the treks can be rather challenging, though rewarding. Be sure to prepare yourself for some climbing, obstacles-crossing, and persistent insects along the way. It is best to engage a local guide who is experienced and knowledgeable about the area, and bring some extra water and light snacks along.
Though Koh Chang is named the Elephant Island, and there are plenty of “guides” that will entice tourists to get on an elephant ride or view some elephant shows, it is not recommended to do so while you’re there. Elephants belong to the wild, not as pets. Though we cannot be sure if they are properly treated while in the hands of these “trainers”, we should not be treating them as an entertain source. There are plenty of other enjoyable and meaningful activities in Koh Chang. We should cut down on the exploitation of these wildlife, so that they can return to their rightful place, in the wild.
